UlcerGard is unique because it's the only FDA drug approved for equine ulcers. The main ingredient, omeprazole, is marketed as UlcerGard and GastroGard. It safely reduces stomach acid, allowing ulcers to heal or prevents them from forming. Gary White, DVM, of Sallisaw Equine Clinic in Sallisaw, OK who participated in an equine study of racehorses, found the omeprazole results "very impressive." As quoted from Equus, October 2011, pg. 35, he says, "There are a lot of other products claiming to be effective for ulcers, but they have not been proven to be effective in blinded clinical studies. I don't recommend any of the other treatments."
GastroGard is used to treat existing ulcers. It is a prescription item. UlcerGard, is a non-prescription item and are used to prevent ulcers under stressful situations, like travel, illness, injury or changing the horse's schedule.
