Remembering Pony Express Re-Ride 1960

Hi, my name is Francie. Today, June 22, 2012 is the annual re-enactment of the Pony Express Re-Ride, here in Marysville Kansas.

Memories of my Dad, David E. Schreiner, riding into Marysville July 28th, 1960 come to mind. My dad was a rural mail carrier in Vermillion, Kansas. He was chosen as one of a thousand of the Pony Express riders. He rode 2 ½ miles into Marysville from the west. The horse he rode was Trixie. She was an American saddle horse, and she was clocked trotting at 20 miles per hour. Dad was 30 minutes ahead of time. Dad was carrying 500 letters valued at $100.00 each. Before he started the ride, he took an oath, the same as the rider did 100 years ago at that time. He wore a shirt with the official insignia on the back. He received a medal and a gold imprinted Bible. The cowboy hat he wore was mine! It was pressed into service for the occasion on my insistence. Dad purchased two of the 24 carat gold plated Centennial Colt revolvers. The cost of the Colt Revolver West was $100.00, the East $80.00 (bought in 1961.) 1,000 centennial revolvers were produced, and they are enclosed in a case with two bronze medals and other Pony Express history and centennial material. One of those revolvers is displayed at the Hollenberg Pony Express Station north of Hanover, KS, along with medals, insignia, and the bible. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Goat Hoof Care

There are many schools of thought regarding hoof care for goats. When goats live in rough, rocky climates, mother nature herself can tend to take care of some of the hoof care needs by breaking off and smoothing rough edges as goats move about. Here in Kansas, we provide a good trim whenever “it’s time”! Our goats are processed for various health care needs several times throughout the year, giving many opportunities for inspection. When goats and newborn kids are released from kidding pens in the fall, a good one-on-one inspection is given and hooves can be trimmed before release from the pen. In late winter and again early spring, everyone receives a CD&T toxoid vaccination. This second round is often coupled with deworming and administration of a Copasure bolus to the adults.

Mid summer calls for a look at eye membranes and determination as to whether to deworm again, with Copasure optional. Since we pride ourselves “multi-taskers” (or maybe we’re just tired), we try to combine hoof trimming with a slow work day. Younger kids won’t usually require much in the way of hoof trimming for at least a year or two.

When trimming, follow the natural lines of the hoof, trimming just a small amount of hoof with each cut. When using a good pair of hoof trimmers, hooves are quite easy to trim through, so there’s no need to go too deep at once. When you see that you are nearing the blood line, do not trim any further, as you are into the active, healthy tissue. Lori H

Rescue Fly Control Trap

The Rescue Fly Control Trap is an inexpensive, hassle-free method to trap and kill thousands of flies. The Rescue Trap is free of pesticides, but does contain an attractant to lure flies in. Simply pull open the cap, add water to the bag, attach string and hang. Rescue Fly Control Traps are most quickly activated in warm areas close to an odor source, making them perfect in and around barns, stables and kennels. Be sure to keep traps from drying out. It’s the water, attractant and already-dead flies that lure more flies in. Once your trap is full, close the cap and dispose of it. Lori H

How to Apply Spot On Video

Monthly flea and tick treatments are a great way to protect your pet year round.

Make sure your dog is comfortable, relaxed and his coat is completely dry before application.

Each brand will have their own applicator and instructions.

Hold applicator upright and away from your face to open.  The entire content will be applied in 1-3 spots depending on the size of your pet.

Gently part the hair coat to expose the skin at a point between the shoulder blades and place the applicator tip directly against the pets skin...direct contact is very important. Slowly squeeze out a portion of content. Continue until all content has been applied.

Make sure to not apply the treatment too quickly as it needs a few seconds to be absorbed into the skin and surrounding hair. If applied to quickly the spot on treatment will roll off the animal and leave your pet unprotected.   

Keep dogs separated from other pets until treatment has dried.

Always read and follow label directions.

Write down date.

Father's Day Boot Giveaway

Father’s Day is quickly approaching, which always gets me to thinking of all the things my Dad has done for me over the years. He’s the guy that carried me to the bus crying the first two weeks of the school year every year from Kindergarten to second grade, because if they let me loose on my own, I would run the opposite direction!! (And by the way, it’s true what they say, paybacks are hell) One of the most treasured things he ever did for me though, besides giving me life and all, is he is the one responsible for my love of horses. I really don’t remember a time where horses were not a part of my life. I rode my own Shetland by the time I was three, had graduated to a wonderful quarter horse named Daisy by the time I was five. The rule always has been if you’re old enough to ride, you’re old enough to help take care of them. At the time, I thought that was a crock, but, looking back now I know it was a life lesson in responsibility.

Classic Equine with the Latest and Greatest Tech for Saddle Pads - Zoombang!

We have all heard about the new products that were developed from research for space exploration. This is another exciting discovery that has been adapted to the equine world. "Zoombang" looks and feels like "Silly Putty," but it is less clay-like and more foam-like. It's a polymer that is soft at rest, hard on impact, and then returns to its fluid state. It won't wear out, dry out, freeze or melt. It absorbs 80% of impact forces and thus reduces injury and stress to the horse wearing a "Zone Series Pad."

I know Zoombang works because two cowboys from Classic Equine showed up at Valley Vet Supply to demonstrate it for us in a product educational meeting. It turned out more hands-on than we expected.

First, one of them covered the back of their hand with a fistful of the gray polymer and let the other one hit him on the spot with a metal tool (a large stapler to be exact). Then one of us braver women took a turn and got their hand knocked, with no ill effects. Then we notched it up a bit. Cowboys are tough guys, and so I teased one to take it on the face. We all laughed, but next thing I know, he had removed his ten-gallon hat and had the Zoombang plastered on his forehead and was handing me the stapler. I am embarrassed to say what happened next. I think I hit him far harder than I meant to. I scared the both of us. He said it didn't hurt him, but I scared him so badly he was going to need to find a bathroom and stand in the back for the rest of the hour. However, it proved that Zoombang works. Really. After he peeled the polymer off, he didn't even have a mark on his forehead. I was very relieved. He could have been cross-eyed the rest of his life. I'm a believer!

These "Made-in-the-USA" Zone Series Pads are really cool. The Zoombang insert is placed inside the pad on both sides along the shoulder area and along the width of the pad. They come in four styles of pad. The first level is a Felt Top Felt Bottom Pad. It comes in a barrel racing size of 30” x 32” and then the 31” x 32” for everyone else. The second level is a Felt Top Fleece Bottom for those who prefer felt and fleece. My favorite is the Suede Top Felt Bottom Pad. It is really a beautiful pad in the chocolate suede leather. It looks like a work of art to me. Finally, they have the pad with a blanket attached at the top of the pad. The Blanket Top comes in seven different colors and is a total of 1 1/4" thick.

I have this feeling that Classic Equine's Zoombang technology is going to be a big "hit" in the saddle pad world. It sure was at our meeting! Ellen
