While attending Global Pet, an industry pet show, I stumbled upon what I feel is one of the best kept secrets in the pet world. Insect Shield for Pets!
Insect Shield may sound familiar to you; the military has been using it for years in soldiers’ clothing. It is available on our clothes too in most sporting goods stores. Also, in recent years, the equine industry has started using Insect Shield on fly protection sheets.
What Is Insect Shield?
How did permethrin originate, and what are its uses? The Insect Shield process binds a proprietary permethrin formula tightly to fabric fibers — resulting in effective, odorless insect protection that lasts the expected lifetime of gear. Permethrin has been successfully used in the United States as an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered product since 1977, with an excellent safety record. It is used in lice shampoos for children, flea dips for dogs, and various other products, some of which are regulated by the FDA.
Which insects does Insect Shield repel?Insect Shield® Repellent gear has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums). Insect Shield® Repellent Gear has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies. The EPA requires extensive effectiveness data to prove a product's ability to repel insects. Many species and varieties of these insects have been tested, including those that can carry dangerous diseases.
What are the benefits of Insect Shield vs. other forms of pet insect protection?Insect Shield for pets puts insect repellency near your dog’s skin, instead of directly on it, and the protection is invisible. Also, the repellency is long lasting, so no re-application is needed. Insect Shield does not have to enter into your dog’s system for it to be effective. Nor, do the insects have to bite in order for the protection to work. You simply have to put Insect Shield gear on your pet or have them use the products and it helps ward off a variety of pesky and dangerous insects. Insect Shield protection is bonded to the textile so it cannot be rubbed off.
Tested and ProvenInsect Shield technology results from years of intensive research and field study. Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of permethrin-treated clothing as an insect repellent. Insect Shield’s own testing methods follow United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, and the results conclusively show that our unique, long-lasting insect protection works.
