Bovine mortality during calving is a major concern for most farmers and ranchers because every cattleman has the same goal when it comes to calving: to produce profit and reduce loss. With that thought in mind, Moocall was created.
The Moocall Calving Sensor is a non-invasive, tail-mounted sensor that monitors the contractions of a cow or heifer. When attached correctly, Moocall can comfortably fit any bovine tail size and, by design, should not get knocked off or caught on gates. Moocall accurately predicts when your cow is most likely to give birth by measuring tail movement patterns triggered by labor contractions. When the contractions reach a certain level of intensity over a period of time, it then sends a text message directly to your cell phone. After receiving the first text message, you will have an average of 1 hour before the cow calves. Easy calving may result in shorter notice periods while difficult calving could text two to three hours beforehand. A second reminder text will be sent 1 hour after the first text if tail activity continues. If the cow has not calved within four days of attaching the unit to the tail, it will prompt you to remove the unit for 3 - 4 hours. This is to avoid cutting off circulation to the animal’s tail, causing irritated tail activity resulting in a false labor text message. After being removed for a few hours, the Moocall can then be reattached for continued monitoring. After calving, simply move the sensor to the next cow due to calve. One device is sufficient for an average farm of 30 head with proper placement management.
Moocall is especially valuable to farmers in the following circumstances:
- Early or late calvers
- Night-time calving
- Pedigree breeds where vet assistance is often required
- Farmers with other jobs which keep them away from the farm
- Where there is distance between the farmhouse and the herd or calving sheds.
The price of the unit includes 1 year of service. The charge for data, unlimited texts, software updates, and support is $136, payable annually. You will be contacted 2 weeks before your service is due to renew.
