You slip them on, you feel comfortable, confident, and it feels good when you see someone do a double take out of the corner of your eye!  LOL. I know I have my favorite pair that I would wear everyday if I could get my laundry done that fast.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kristi P of Collins, OH. You are the winner of our 2012 Ariat Boot Giveaway. I will be personally contacting you to get your style and size of Ladies Dahlia 9" Boots ordered.

Jennifer, you asked for suggestions for your wedding; do you want the boots to match your wedding colors, or are you looking for something that is more universal? Either way, definitely go with something that is going to be comfortable! I have to share that I wore canvas tennis shoes all day at my wedding. My sister-in-law appliqued them to match my wedding dress, so unless I showed you, you had no idea! J By the way, I was very comfortable.

Beverly noted that you would like to see a wider variety of kids boots available through Valley Vet.

Kathy, you have a narrow foot, and no Ariat store close to you to try on, and don’t really want to order from a mail house in case you have to return. You’ve kind of stumped me, but I can tell you I will keep a look-out for a narrow Ariat to add to the catalog.

Many of you ladies are asking for a wider boot, I will also look to add those options, when available, when I’m setting up boots.

Thanks to all of you for listing your favorite boot companies. That will give me leads on who I should start making contact with and see what we can do to add their boots to our selection.

You Can Lead a Horse to Water

The nights are getting colder and the freezes have changed the outdoors into their usual Fall colors. This morning, on the way in to work, I stopped to let a flock (rafter, brood) of about 30 turkeys slowly cross the road. Not an attractive bird, but very interesting. The crops are coming out, and there are less hiding places for animals so consequently they are on the move. Deer especially are constantly on the go between water and feed sources.

Due to the continuing drought, water for all animals is at a premium. Ponds have all but dried to mud pits and if you have waterers in your lots, animals of all kinds are trying to get to them. It is good sense to always keep water sources clean and in good working order. Before it is time to throw the switch for the water heaters in automatic waterers, open up the waterers to make sure nothing has taken up residence and the wiring is still intact. Scrub out the basins and clear away debris to insure direct access.

If you live in an area where you do not use waterers with built-in heaters, you may still need a de-icer. We carry a great line of water heater products for everything from buckets, bird baths, chicken waterers (I need one too!), small to large ponds, tanks, and more. If you use a fill valve, you may need to have parts replaced due to the heavy volume of use. Keep replacement parts on hand so there isn’t a mad dash to get them.

As you are putting away the water hose for the winter, make sure it is well drained by laying it down a hill or drawing up over a post or tree limb. This will allow water to drain out and not cause the hose to burst as the temps go below freezing. For those that have to fill tanks throughout winter, you may want to consider a heated hose. They have become a real time saver.

The old saying you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink is still true if the water is not worth drinking! Keep warm, stay safe, and be prepared. Helen

September Update - 2012 West Nile Outbreak

West Nile virus is becoming increasingly more threatening as the season progresses. Every state in the continental U.S. has reported West Nile virus activity this year. To date, just over 2000 human cases and 87 deaths have been reported, with half of those numbers coming in the last 3 weeks alone. This is the largest number of disease cases ever reported in the U.S. at this point in the season.

People and horses acquire West Nile virus from the same source – the mosquito. Because there is not a preventative vaccine for people, the best way for us to avoid disease is to prevent mosquito bites. Many insect repellents and insecticide sprays are quite effective in keeping mosquitoes at bay. For horses, the greatest insurance against West Nile comes from vaccination. Horses can acquire significant protection when vaccinated with an equine West Nile vaccine each year. Refer to our West Nile Virus vaccine chart to review the options.

What to watch for – The symptoms of West Nile virus are similar, whether infecting people or horses. Infections target the central nervous system. Early signs include fever, depression, stiffness, muscle twitching, hypersensitivity to stimulus, and loss of appetite. As it progresses, muscle weakness, stupor and paralysis may develop. Inattention, daydreaming or staring off into space should be monitored, as this may reflect a change in mental status. Symptoms may persist for days or weeks, and some neurological effects may be permanent. Like most illnesses, the benefits of prevention are worth the effort. Stay safe! Lori H.
